The Christian life is a strange thing. I find more often than not, things made more sense in the past than they do now. Charting the old path was easy. Charting the current path is difficult.
Then I remind myself that the old path only seems like it was easy because it’s been charted now. I was groping around in the dark then as we all do through life at times. God provided the light needed in the way and the time that it was needed right then.
Because that provision was right then, doesn’t mean it’s right now. Or in other words, we shouldn’t expect God to keep doing the same thing, in the same way, all the time.
Plenty of times God asks us to do something and we don’t know why.
Like during Lent a few years ago. I got up early expecting God wanted me to pray. Nope. Instead he wanted me to worship (silently, it was early). I was a bit miffed by this, but I worshipped using the Getty’s album, Awaken the Dawn. Seemed appropriate for the time of day and the album starts with a call to God’s people. After about a week I was less miffed and more loving it. (It’s so good I’ve added the first track below)
After a time I sensed God telling me to stop with the worship and start with the prayer. I wasn’t happy. I wanted my ‘sacrifice of praise’ to continue.
However, I was reminded that even if I don’t know the reason, it’s best to obey, so I did.
Sometimes we want God to keep doing things the way we know. Instead, just when we’re getting comfortable, he tells us to do something new now. At this time, all we can do is trust and obey.
As for this Lent, I wasn’t expecting to be blogging.
However, I was reminded that even if I don’t know the reason, it’s best to obey, so I did.
Yours waking up,
Alison
