Even on Maundy Thursday, I feel like it’s time for a throwback.
This time an Audio Adrenaline one.
I was tempted to throw all the way back to Big House from 1993 because I spent a lot of time listening to that gem. However, I’ve decided that’s a little too far back and have jumped 20 years into the future and still produced a throwback with Kings and Queens.
In reading about this song, I discovered why I’d erroneously thought it was a DC Talk song in the past – because Kevin Max of DC Talk was Audio Adrenaline’s lead singer for this album.
My ears are better than I knew.
I haven’t got perfect pitch but I’ll take whatever win I can.
The song Kings and Queens is about children living in poverty.
But I also think the principle in the song can be broadened out further.
We don’t have to just look overseas or to those who are living in poverty. There are plenty of people who are missing out on a whole range of things: friendship, community, dignity, purpose.
These are also ‘the least of these’, children or not.
Won’t you look around, these are the lives that the world has forgotten
Waiting for doors of our hearts and our homes to open
A well-oiled church or believer never leaves someone hung out to dry and forgotten.
Yours looking around for those missing out,
Alison
Whoa oh, whoa oh oh oh
Little hands, shoe-less feet, lonely eyes looking back at me
Will we leave behind the innocent to grieve
On their own, on the run when their lives have only begun
These could be our daughters and our sons
And just like a drum I can hear their hearts beating
I know my God won’t let them be defeated
Every child has a dream to belong and be loved
Boys become kings, girls will be queens
Wrapped in Your majesty
When we love, when we love the least of these
Then they will be brave and free
Shout your name in victory
When we love, when we love the least of these
When we love the least of these
Whoa oh, whoa oh oh oh
Whoa oh, whoa oh oh oh
Break our hearts once again
Help us to remember when
We were only children hoping for a friend
Won’t you look around, these are the lives that the world has forgotten
Waiting for doors of our hearts and our homes to open
Boys become kings, girls will be queens
Wrapped in Your majesty
When we love, when we love the least of these
Then they will be brave and free
Shout your name in victory
When we love when we love the least of these
When we love the least of these
Whoa oh, whoa oh oh oh
If not us who will be like Jesus
To the least of these
If not us tell me who will be like Jesus
Like Jesus to the least of these
Boys become kings, girls will be queens
Wrapped in your majesty
When we love, when we love the least of these
Then they will be brave and free shout your name in victory
We will love, we will love the least of these
We will love the least of these
We will love the least of these
We will love the least of these
We will love the least of these
We will love the least of these
