#265 Advent Eve

Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful.

As we almost hit the Christmas season, I’m drawn to think of those in the Old Testament, prior to the arrival of Jesus Christ on earth. They were still waiting for the promises to be fulfilled of a Messiah who would come and lead God’s people out of darkness and into light.

They lived a long time and through many generations without seeing the fulfilment of God’s plans. At times they probably weren’t even sure what they were waiting for; their response to Jesus when he actually arrives makes that likely.

Yet God’s promises are unshakeable and stand firm. Not one has ever fallen to the ground. Even if it was made centuries earlier.

Christmas is therefore a time of fulfilment. The pages of the gospels are littered with references to the Old Testament – some explicit, others more subdued for those in the know – and the ways in which the promises of the past are finding fulfilment as God’s people meet angels, have their voice taken away, fall pregnant under highly unexpected circumstances (understatement) and meet God in the flesh.

Christmas is also a time to look back upon, being placed so many centuries ago now. An opportunity for us to see how God always keeps his promises and manoeuvres players across a large amount of terrain to ensure that every single word is fulfilled.

Christmas is also a time to be present (not just give presents). It’s a time for us to soak into the pages of the Bible and explore every moment of the ‘thin space’ of Christmas time, when heaven and earth draw near.

And finally, Christmas is a time to share with one another. A time to share in carols and work parties and open homes having that gathering that you meant to have back in February. It’s also a time to share our stories. To have open hearts with one another and practise honesty as well as hospitality.

For, as they say, if not at Christmas, then when?

It’s a time for new beginnings, for restoration of what is broken and torn and a time for stepping out in faith to claim God’s promises in our lives.

Look back. Look forward. Be present. Share with others. That’s how you’ll give yourself the best Christmas season this year.

Yours on advent eve,

Alison
