#270: Adonai

LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory in the heavens. Through the praise of children and infants you have established a stronghold against your enemies, to silence the foe and the avenger. Psalm 8:1-2

So the word Lord or Master from the Hebrew, Adonai is found here at the start of Psalm 8.

And the God of the bible is a Sovereign God and it’s not surprising that he has majesty attached to His name because it makes sense that the two would go together.

If there’s a being in the universe who is all powerful, nothing happens outside of His hand or command, then it just makes sense that that being, must be glorious.

And the God of the Bible is Sovereign. There is nothing that happens without Him having ordained it. he is the Lord. He is the master of the universe as it says here in Psalm 8.

So this Lord and this master is strong, but he establishes his strength in some very unexpected ways – through the praise of the nest generation. And it is so true that there are times when we talk to children d we think ‘Wow you have a really pure faith, a pure trust in God.’ And there might even be times when we think, ‘Wow I wish some of the adults in the church could express the level of insight that you have. And it is important as we become adults to grow and mature, we don’t want to stop doing that but we also want to maintain our childlike faith in our father God.

One thing I find hugely comforting about this verse is it says that God has established a stronghold against the enemies of his people. And not just a stronghold against the enemies; it’s a safe place and that the enemies will be silenced. And I just think ‘Wow. That is an indication of just how much the Lord is the Master.’ Not only can He keep us safe but He can silence those who are our enemies in a stronghold that He has created.

Now usually I’m the person who is praying that the Holy Spirit’s power will shatter demonic strongholds. And I’m not necessarily going to stop praying that anytime soon because I genuinely believe there’s are plenty of demonic strongholds in our world that perhaps people aren’t paying as much attention to as they could and therefore they continue to grow and multiply.

But I do think it is very comforting that here we see God saying, ‘Yes, I do know those demonic strongholds exist but I have build one myself, for that very reason. And I think that is a very reassuring and comforting thing; to know that our God, the Lord has just as safe a place as he can create. And as I said already, nothing happens outside of His hands. So it is as safe a place as can be.

So I think, looking at the name Adonai I’m encouraged to keep trusting in God. To keep remembering that He is the sovereign God. To keep remembering that He’s in control.

He’s the Lord, the master. He has a safe stronghold and so therefore, I should continue submitting faithfully to His leadership, knowing that with Him is the safest place to be.
