Advent 2023 #16: Walk On

So you’ve taken some baby steps now, as per yesterday’s post. Well done.

Now what? Walk on.

Apologies if you’re not a U2 fan, because I know what song is now in my head.

If epic tales are any indication for us, then it’s always best if the protagonist – which is you in this case, my dear reader – doesn’t walk on alone.

A group of two or three people who you can metaphorically walk with, is a wonderful thing.

I know this because I have two friends that I do exactly that with as I ‘follow’.

We’ve met for about 12 years now. Yes, there’s been breaks when one lived interstate (which also had a pandemic in the mix) and another went overseas twice (also including a pandemic in the mix). However, whilst there’s been breaks we still meet now.

Originally we called ourselves a ‘prayer triplet’ but, as these two friends recently said in a speech at my fortieth, these days it’s more like a frequent (fortnightly-ish) coffee catch up.

But we still pray for each other. We still encourage each other in the faith. It’s still discipling.

There are no rules for how a triplet is done. You might even do a quad.

Or you might prefer a one-on-one.

I haven’t done this for a while but I used to in the past. I used to meet fortnightly with someone who worked at my church.

She walked with me when I was changing from an Education degree into an Arts degree. There was a lot of wisdom and guidance that she shared as I navigated that one.

I still consider her my mentor.

Have you got yourself a mentor? ‘Following the star’ is a journey. A spiritual journey. It’s best that you don’t journey alone.

Can you get a posse or a mentor to help you keep walking?

Or perhaps you could be a mentor for someone else?

Just like the other day, you want to ‘keep in step’ with God as you walk on, every day. It’s always good to set up people around you who can help you do that.

How will you walk today?

Yours in a posse,

Alison
