Lent 2025 #47: Easter Sunday

On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the women took the spices they had prepared and went to the tomb. They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. While they were wondering about this, suddenly two men in clothes that gleamed like lightning stood beside them. In their fright the women bowed down with their faces to the ground, but the men said to them, “Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not here; he has risen! Remember how he told you, while he was still with you in Galilee:‘The Son of Man must be delivered over to the hands of sinners, be crucified and on the third day be raised again.’ ” Then they remembered his words.

It would have been so confusing. And bewildering. And frightening.

Yet here are the women, faithfully coming to the tomb to do what could not be done on the Sabbath.

Small detail about the stone needing to be rolled away before they could do anything.

No dramas. God sorted that.

In fact, he sorted the whole thing.

And the angels in a somewhat comedic, celestial moment, question why the women are even in the vicinity. Alive people don’t hang out in tombs.

Remember how he told you…

The action of remembering is all throughout the Bible.

God remembers his people. Time and time again.

We remember his promises and his commands… hopefully. Well, with his help we do.

What does this look like? Just like it did for the women.

Then they remembered his words.

You’ve got to know his words though to remember them. Got to start reading them. Then keep reading them, day after day after day.

When I’m confused I go back to his words: the promises of what he says he will give to me: love, forgiveness, sanctification, peace and joy.

Not that I deserve it, but because he promises it.

When I’m confused I go back to his words: the commands of what I should do and what I should do as someone who professes to follow the God of the Bible.

Remember how he told you…

Then they remembered his words…

These should be the sentence starters Christians encourage each other by in conversation, in text, in blog posts and whatever other platforms you like – and be doing it all the time.

Read the Word. Remember what God said. Let it guide your course. And be blessed.

Yours remembering His words,

Alison
